With over a fifth of parents facing huge school clothing bills that they cannot afford1 and the cost of clothing increasing year on year2, now has never been a better time to take care of your clothes.
The average household spends over £30 a week3 on clothing which when you add up the jackets, suits, dresses and tops bought over the years, the total can be staggering. Experts at Surcare, the range of laundry and household products created for more sensitive skins, recommends using products that are sensitive to your clothes as well as your skin.
Many washing powders and liquids contain detergents, perfumes and dyes that can break down the fibres in fabrics and speed up general wear and tear. Many laundry products also contain a whole range of substances, including enzymes that can leave residual traces in fabrics.
Melanie Mason, brand marketing manager at Surcare explains, "Just like you, clothes need to rest and how you wash and treat fabrics can significantly enhance their lifespan. Making a small change such as choice of laundry products can help preserve clothing as well as save money in the long term.
"We recommend using products that don't contain unnecessary additives and Surcare offers outstanding cleaning performance yet doesn't contain potentially irritating dyes or perfumes. We feel that it's not what is put in that's important, it's what is left out!"
The development team at Surcare has come up with the following tips to make caring for your clothes easier.
- Clothes need to rest. Make sure items in your wardrobe are rotated on a daily basis. Suits, for example, should rest at least one full day before being worn again.
- Remember to hang or fold your garments every time you take them off to allow them to drape back into their intended shape and ensure no unwanted creasing.
- Every so often air your clothes to prevent odours from becoming absorbed and creases taking shape.
- Dust can prematurely deteriorate and age garments - therefore, brush off accumulated dust from your clothes. For best results, use a natural bristle brush.
- When washing, make sure clothes are turned inside out to preserve colour and prevent fading. Also, zip up any zippers to prevent snagging.
- Add a softener to your wash, leaving clothes softer to touch and easier to iron.
- An extra rinse on your washing cycle can help remove any possible residue.
- Use detergents that are kinder to your clothes yet still deliver outstanding cleaning results.
- When ironing, place a damp cloth between the iron and fabric to preserve the garments original colour and ensure it remains as undamaged as possible.
- Finally, always follow the cleaning instructions!
